Abstract

The article describes the art project ‘New Jerusalem VR. Work in progress’, which aims to explore the relationship between the temporal reality and the divine reality. The work is inspired by the description of New Jerusalem in chapters 21 and 22 of the Apocalypse of St. John. The project does not aim to literally recreate the biblical description, but to create an immersive VR space in which elements of the everyday world and human figures become part of the reality described in the Apocalypse. As part of the project, the author explores the possibilities of the immersive medium of Virtual Reality in creating artistic work related to the sacred.

The artistic work uses the technique of 3D scanning of people and objects, which, together with sound elements, create a collage presented as an exhibition in virtual reality. Volunteers are scanned along with objects they consider beautiful and good. The participatory nature of the work emphasises the idea of co-creating the ‘Kingdom of God’. New Jerusalem VR remains an open, never-ending work in progress, encouraging us to constantly question the experience of the sacred in everyday life.
