Abstract

Following Miwon Kwon, this paper aims to define the concept of art in public space. It examines the biographies of selected realizations, highlighting the degree of audience involvement as an important criterion influencing their evaluation. This paper also demonstrates how the anthropological perspective represented by Alfred Gell can be applied to investigate the phenomenon of participation in art projects in public space. The considerations will be illustrated with examples drawn from research into the phenomenon of Julita Wójcik’s Tęcza [The Rainbow] sculpture erected in 2012–2015 on plac Zbawiciela [Saviour Square] in Warsaw. Refer will also be made to the 2019 documentary film Punkt zapalny [The Flashpoint], directed by Wojciech Jankowski.
