We would like to kindly invite you to submit papers for the next volume of “Annales Universitatis Pedagogicae Cracoviensis. Studia de Arte et Educatione” dedicated to the phenomenon of the open-air movement in the 20th century.

The original term “plein air” refers to the method, popularized in 19th-century art practice, of painting a landscape directly from nature, in an open space that is attractive in terms of terrain and vegetation. However, it is also advisable to use the term in relation to activities of a different type: erecting sculptures, installations or staging performances in a different environment: rural, urban or industrial. The “open-air sessions” concept is also used to describe an organized meeting, a temporary grouping of artists, devoting themselves to working together in a specific place. In Poland during the communist period, but also in other European countries, plein-air activities became a specific form of organization of artistic life, subjected to the bureaucratic rules of the socialist state. It was also a specific type of contact between artists themselves and between them and society. The highest concentration of the movement was in areas far from art centres, and they were located around factories of various industries which was a characteristic feature of the time. Under this industrial patronage there were, among others: the Biennial of Spatial Forms in Elbląg, the 1st Symposium of Artists and Scientists in Puławy, as well as local and cyclical events - workshops in Orońsko, Suchedniów, Biskupin, Bolesławiec and in many other places in Poland. As a result of this meetings outdoor sculpture collections, as well as individual, lone objects, located in city centres, but also in their outskirts, in parks, and in memorable areas were created. Collections of pictures were put on display in cultural centres, schools, workplaces. The effects of outdoor actions located in rural and recreational areas were often temporary, but traces of them can still be found in archives and in print media.

This issue of “Studia de Arte et Educatione” welcomes researchers from different backgrounds, such as: art historians, experts of cultural studies, philosophers and artists - participants of open-air workshops from Poland and other European countries. We are interested in such issues as:

- methods of working outdoors

-reconstruction of cyclical open-air sessions in centers that have not been the subject of research so far

- presence of amateur artists at outdoor meetings

- the state of preservation of the post-open-air heritage and the importance of temporary activities (the problem of documentation)

- reports of participants of the open-air movement

- open air sessions as a laboratory for artistic experiments

- interdisciplinary character  of open-air events (artists and scientists)
